Hi there Intriguer.Β Briefings at the Pentagon arenβt typically a laughing matter. But itβs hard to keep a straight face when someone compares the movements of a notorious Russian mercenary with the cult 1980s comedy, Weekend at Bernieβs.

Summer Davos kicks off in China
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
1,500 government folks, business leaders and technocrats have descended on the Chinese port city of Tianjin for a World Economic Forum conference this week. Itβs the conferenceβs first in-person appearance in four years.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Many smaller economies see this Annual Meeting of the New Champions,Β aka βSummer Davosβ, as an opportunity for a bit of that sweet, sweet limelight, which is often dominated by bigger players at regular Davos.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Some of the notable moments so far this year include:
-
π¨π³ Chinese Premier Li Qiang criticising the Westβs βde-riskingβ from China, and urging companies to make their own decisions instead.
-
πΈπ¦ Saudi Arabia sending one of the largest delegations of any country, potentially reflecting its warmer ties with Beijing (though the Saudis often βroll deepβ like this).
-
π₯Β New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins visiting a local store to sample one of the ~1.5 billion kiwifruit his country exports to China each year. These media moments are often aimed at audiences back home (Hipkins faces an election in October).
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Intrigue’s take: If you werenβt even aware of a βSummer Davosβ, youβre not alone. Itβs a bit of a βDavos liteβ in terms of size, prestige, and profile.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
But as with any summit, the real value is often backstage: delegates hold endless meetings, sign deals, and propose new ones. Plus for China, still struggling to kickstart its post-COVID economy, playing host is an opportunity to (again) tell the world that itβs open for business.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Also worth noting:
-
In 2021, Tianjin fell out of the top 10 Chinese cities measured by GDP, having been ranked as high as sixth in 2017.
-
The kiwifruit is native to China (not New Zealand). The principal of an all-girls school brought the first seeds to New Zealand in 1904.

A Banksy got everyday investors 32% returns?
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Mm-hmm, sure. So, whatβs the catch?
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
We know it may sound too good to be true. But thousands of investors are already smiling all the way to the bank, thanks to the fine-art investing platform Masterworks.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
These results arenβt cherry-picking. This is the whole bushel. Masterworks has built a track record of 13 exits, including net returns of +10.4%, +27.3%, and +35.0%, even while financial markets plummeted.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
But art? Really? Okay, skeptics, here are the numbers. Contemporary art prices:
-
outpaced the S&P 500 by 131% over the last 26 years
-
have the lowest correlation to equities of any asset class

Is a global economic crisis looming?
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), aka the βbank for central banksβ, has warned that the global economy is at a critical juncture.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Launching his annual report, BIS chief Agustin Carstens said the task for central banks was clear: raise rates until inflation cools. But his message to governments was more blunt: stop βobsessively [pursuing] short term growthβ.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Why? Carstens says if governments donβt rein in spending and/or raise taxes, we run the risk of persistent inflation, financial instability, and even a recession.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Intrigueβs take: Sheesh. Way to kill the buzz, Carstens.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
But he does offer us a glimpse of hope, saying thereβs a sense the economy can still achieve a βsoft-ishβ landing. Itβll just require some tough choices: which spending to cut, which taxes to raise, and by how much?
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Thatβs probably why he ends his speech calling for βa degree of courageβ.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Also worth noting:
-
Carstens was previously Mexicoβs central bank chief for eight years.
-
In 2022, the world spent $13T on interest payments (14.5% of global GDP); most expect that figure to rise this year.
