Gabon has become the 6th African nation to experience a coup or unconstitutional transition since 2020
Gabonโs military seizes power
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Senior military officers announced late yesterday (Wednesday) theyโve taken over Gabonโs institutions and annulled the weekendโs contested election results, which had seen President Ali Bongo declared winner.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Whatโs happening? Troops have detained Bongo, closed the borders, imposed a curfew, and announced the coup leader (General Brice Oligui Nguema, head of the presidential guard) as transitional leader.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
The ousted Bongo has released a video seeking international support, but jubilant crowds in the streets suggest the coup enjoys popular support.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Why? Folks were frustrated with Bongo and his familyโs 55-year rule:
-
๐ก The Bongos and other elites have reportedly amassed vast overseas real estate portfolios
-
๐ข๏ธ A third of Gabonโs people still live below the poverty line, despite the OPEC member producing 200k barrels of oil per day, and
-
๐ These elections were plagued by delays, a lack of international observers, limits on some foreign broadcasts, and internet cuts.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
So whatโs the rest of the world saying?ย
-
๐ The African Union has urged a โrapid return to democratic constitutional orderโ
-
๐ซ๐ท France (the former colonial power) has condemned the coup, calling for โthe result of the election, when knownโ to be respected
-
๐บ๐ธย The US says the coup is โdeeply concerningโ, and it supports โthe people of Gabon and their demand for democratic governance“
-
๐จ๐ณย China has called on all sides to โresolve differences peacefully through dialogueโ and โrestore order at an early dateโ, and
-
๐บ๐ณย The UN has flagged โdeep concernโ with the election, and โfirmlyโ condemned the coup โas a means to resolve the post-electoral crisisโ
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Intrigue’s take: So pretty much the whole world has condemned the methods. But itโs harder to find voices calling for Bongoโs reinstatement. Thatโs in stark contrast to the recent coup in Niger, where much of the world has continued to call for ousted President Bazoumโs return to power.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
The difference? Probably legitimacy. Nigerโs democratically-elected Bazoum still has some. Gabonโs decades-long Bongo family rule? Not so much.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Also worth noting:
-
Like the ousted Bongo, coup leader Nguema reportedly also has property in the US.
-
French President Macron visited Gabon earlier this year as part of a tour to revive Franceโs troubled ties with its former colonies.
-
French critical minerals player Eramet initially suspended operations in Gabon. French oil giant TotalEnergies hasnโt yet said whether its local operations have been impacted.

President-elect Bernardo Arรฉvalo
Guatemalaโs president-elect is in a bind
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Guatemalaโs electoral tribunal suspended the party of president-elect Bernardo Arรฉvalo on Monday (29 August), the same day it confirmed his victory in the 20 August elections.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Unless successfully appealed, the ruling means members of Arรฉvaloโs Semilla (seed) movement would join Congress as independents, limiting their ability to shape Guatemalaโs legislative agenda.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
And itโs just this electionโs latest irregularity:
-
๐ Four candidates, including the initial front-runner, were banned ahead of Juneโs first-round election
-
๐ Police then raided Semillaโs offices after Arรฉvalo unexpectedly made the second-round ballot on an anti-corruption platform, and
-
โ๏ธ Guatemalaโs attorney-general (herself designated as โcorruptโ by Washington) then attempted to dissolve Semilla.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
A court then suspended that dissolution until after voting day, but with the election in the rear-view, the order has now gone through.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Intrigueโs take: As if Arรฉvaloโs gig wasnโt hard enough already… Without the backing of his partyโs lawmakers in Congress, itโs hard to see Arรฉvaloโs anti-corruption agenda making much headway.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
And thatโs a familiar story for candidates tackling ingrained corruption anywhere: permitted to win the occasional battle, but never the war.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Also worth noting:
-
Arรฉvalo is the son of Guatemalaโs first democratically-elected president, who survived dozens of coup attempts during his six-year term. Arรฉvalo is also Guatemalaโs former ambassador to Spain.
-
Heโll be inaugurated as Guatemalaโs 52nd president on 14 January 2024.

Today in 1991, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan declared independence from the Soviet Union, becoming the 12th and 13th former-Soviet republics to do so. The USSR would be formally dissolved four months later.
Yesterdayโs poll: Do you think taxing high-emission vehicles is a good idea?
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
๐จ๐จ๐จ๐จโฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธ ๐ธ Yes, it’s good for the environment and city revenues (43%)

Your two cents:
-
๐ธย J.P: โDeath from air pollution punishes mostly poorer people, including poorer motorists.โ
-
๐ย G.L: โNot at all! Being โgreenโ involves more than just cars. Why not tax the airlines, manufacturers and municipalities for their contribution to pollution first.โ
-
โ๏ธ A.W: โIf the tax is [โฆ] part of a comprehensive program that would use the tax revenue to subsidize public transportation for those same low income people, or even a cash for clunkers program to incentivize them to trade their vehicles in for an upgraded vehicle, then maybe yes.โ
