Hi there Intriguer.ย Thursdays donโt get enough credit. In Thailand, itโs good luck to wear orange on Thursdays. Swedes enjoy pea soup and pancakes on Thursdays. And folks in Estonia hit the sauna on Thursdays. So wherever you are, just get out there and punish that pea soup, rock that orange sweater, or work up that schvitz. Itโs Thursday!

๐ฑ Portugal | Tech

Huawei has again found itself in the crosshairs.
Huawei sues Portugal over 5G ban
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Chinese tech giant Huawei has filed a lawsuit against a ban on its equipment being used in Portugalโs 5G networks.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Lisbonโs cybersecurity council issued the resolution back in May; it doesnโt name Huawei directly, but prevents the use of 5G equipment from firms based outside the European Union, NATO, and the OECD.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
A dozen or so other countries have already imposed their own limits on Huawei.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Whyโs everyone so worried? Governments have been reluctant to share evidence (itself sometimes obtained via hacking), but Huawei has allegedly:
-
๐ฉ๐ฐ Conducted corporate espionage in Denmark
-
๐ฆ๐บ Used software updates to hack telco providers in Australia
-
๐บ๐ธ Placed possible interception gear near US bases, and
-
๐ Sent African Union data to unknown servers in Shanghai.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
And notwithstanding Huaweiโs denials (plus its claims that the bans are simply protectionism by another name), Western governments worry that Beijing can force Huawei to support Chinaโs intel agencies regardless.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Despite all this, Huawei (with its low prices) is still leading the global 4/5G rollout:
-
Itโs built 70% of Africaโs 4G infrastructure
-
More than half the 5G kit in eight EU countries is China-built, and
-
Huawei holds 20% of the global telco equipment market more broadly.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Intrigue’s take: The way tech is evolving, itโs often hard to prove (publicly, at least) that specific actors are exploiting specific vulnerabilities to get specific data for specific purposes. So trust is key. And that broke down years ago.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Also worth noting:
-
Portugalโs main telco operators already announced in 2020 that they wouldnโt use Huawei kit in their core 5G networks.
-
Huawei just launched a new 5G phone, prompting speculation about Chinaโs ability to source advanced chips despite US sanctions.
-
Huawei is suing Sweden under the countryโs bilateral investment treaty with China.

Liquid Assets, Solid Returns
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
A whiskey got everyday people a 30% return?
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
You read that right. There are people smiling all the way to the bank, thanks to the wine and whiskey investing platform Vinovest.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Vinovest has built an easy-to-use site where anyone can invest in casks of whiskey. Recently, Vinovest helped sell casks for a 32% return after seven months. With a little patience, you too can see your โliquidโ assets can generate solid returns.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Thatโs because these numbers arenโt the exception. Theyโre the rule. Fine whiskey prices have:
-
Increased 314% over the last decade
-
A near-zero correlation to equities
-
Outperformed the S&P 500 over the last three recessions
๐ฎ๐ฉ Indonesia | Energy & climate

Smog is obscuring Jakartaโs iconic Wisma 46 skyscraper.
Jakarta is the worldโs most polluted city
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Indonesia has ordered a major coal-fired plant operator outside Jakartaโs metro area (pop: 31 million) to halve output in order to address air pollution.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
The curb came just as the capital city hosted this weekโs ASEAN Summit, and was presumably one of several steps Indonesia took to put on its best face.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
But cosmetic measures wonโt be enough to clear the worldโs most-polluted city’s air. Policymakers have also:
-
๐ Opened a new light rail to serve the metro area
-
๐ป Ordered some civil servants to work from home to reduce commutes, and
-
๐๏ธ Broken ground on a new capital, Nusantara, to alleviate Jakartaโs congestion.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Intrigueโs take: Interestingly, a US and Japan-led partnership of rich countries promised $20B to help wean Indonesia off coal at last yearโs G20 in Bali. But the details have proven devilish, and the partners said last month they need several more months to kick things off.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
For the pollution-choked residents of Jakarta, thereโs no time to waste.
p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }
Also worth noting:
-
Several press reports have speculated that Indonesian President Joko Widodoโs stubborn cough is related to the capitalโs air pollution.
-
Indonesia currently generates around 60% of its electricity from coal, and is the worldโs largest coal exporter.

Today in 1977, US President Jimmy Carter and Panamaโs leader Omar Torrijos signed a treaty to eventually transfer control of the Panama Canal from the US to Panama. Washington had secured the rights to the canal in 1903 after it sided with Panamanian secessionists breaking away from Colombia.

Your two cents:
-
๐ชย C.L: โHas potential. Unlike blocs like BRICS, the members should at least have regional common interests of some sort. But just like other blocs, they can’t seem to get traction in actually working together, and translating words into action. Until they do, it’s just a nice get-together for photo ops.โ
-
๐คทย V.S: โVery much like the BRICS. [โฆ] there are simply too many competing opinions on geopolitical issues for ASEAN to ever be meaningful.โ
-
โ๏ธ M.Q.K: โIt’s been a fast-growing region for a while, but has never been able to wield influence internationally outside of the bloc. Unless there’s more determination from its members and willingness to wield its influence over major shipping routes and economies, it’ll always be a paper tiger.โ
